Will a Masonry Contractor Be Able to Do Veneer?
Masonry veneer is a material which is used on exterior walls of residential homes and businesses. It is made up of pieces of brick or stone and offers the appearance of solid masonry, however, without the weight and cost associated with it. Masonry veneer is applied to a building’s structure, and is self-supporting, which means no additional weight is placed upon the building’s structure. Because it is normally only used for appearances and is not load bearing, masonry veneer walls are sometimes known as curtain walls.
There are two ways to use masonry veneer. The first uses an anchoring system and brick ties and brackets to attach the veneer walls. The second method is an adhered system. With the latter method, the veneer will be attached using a layer of mortar, without using any brick ties. Most local building codes will specify which system is to be used, usually based
upon
a building’s design, and in
case
of high winds or other similar weather-related issues.
The outer layer of these walls is made using masonry veneer and mortar. All depending on which kind of veneer the
uses, the stone it is being applied onto could dictate a backer board be used. In the case of brick veneer, the exterior could be self-supporting and will not need a backer board. An air cavity will be created behind the veneer, which is for drainage. The inner layer of the wall will be the building’s structural support system, this could consist of blocks or a more traditional steel or wood frame.
Masonry veneer does provide various advantages above other kinds of construction. The air cavity allows for more effective drainage, this prevents water or moisture from damaging a structure. The water will be able to travel more freely to the air cavity, after which it will
simply
drain to the outside via weep holes. The air cavity provides more room for insulation, which will greatly improve the thermal resistance of walls.
